Biography
Moria Isobel Dunbar was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. She died November 22nd 1999 in Nepean, Ontario.
Early Years
Moria Isobel Dunbar was educated at Cranley School for the girls. Her father, William Dunbar was a well-known sheriff and advocate at the Scottish bar. The family lived in Stornaway, Strathpeffer. Moria Dubars first career was being a stage actress in London, preforming for the armed forces in the second word war. She then obtained her geography degree in Oxford University and a few years after, she immigrated to Canada. She then moved to the defense research board in 1952, a time when scientific work in the north was just starting. Dunbar was able to overcome the hatred of the fact that she was the only woman on military aircraft of icebreakers. She, later became a recognized expert on sea ice.
Contributions/Discoveries
She was one of the first women to fly over the north pole. She also worked as an ice adviser on the hovercraft trials 1966-69, and observed the cruise of the Manhattan in 1969 to test supertankers in ice
1. received the Order of Canada and Fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada.
